Just when you thought the blog cycle was over… SHE RETURNS.
That’s right. The ever divisive Lana Del Rey is back in town. She’s playing the sold out Irving Plaza tonight, a decidedly less intimate setting than her first couple of shows in New York, which were at Glasslands and Bowery Ballroom.
Lana might have moved onto slightly larger venues, but her buzz has died down considerably. She’s not even our most BLOGGED show for TONIGHT, let alone the week. The mindie-starlet comes in THIRD (for the week) behind the ever bloggable (and equally divisive) Drake, J Cole, Waka Flocka Flame and Meek Mill at the PNC Bank Arts Center down in Holmdel, NJ next Tuesday; and a FREE show from BIG K.R.I.T. at the West 14th Street Apple store TONIGHT. Wristbands are going quickly for that one. They must be picked up prior to the show, so head over the West Village NOW if you plan on going tonight.
Glasslands might not have Lana this go-around, but they do have this week’s EDITORS PICK, and that’s Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Doldrums and Vinyl Williams tomorrow night (they also play tonight at Mercury Lounge). There’s a sick FREE afterparty going on afterwards, with DJ sets from Glasslands owners/Popgun Booking founders: Internet Xplorer and Getawolfpup. There’s also a SPECIAL GUEST DJ set from DJ Ravves, aka Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber.
285 Kent’s got an equally awesome show going on simultaneously right next door, with DIIV, Mac DeMarco, Minks, Life Size Maps and Crinkles. Hey, if you drop just $22 between the two, you can shuffle back and forth for a mini-Kent Ave music festival Friday night. I think I just sold myself on the idea. See y’all tomorrow.
THAT’S NOT ALL… Canadian dark-rockers 2:54 are back in town for a couple nights this week with local favorites Widowspeak (!!) and Spanish Prisoners. They’re off the Lorimer stop over at Knitting Factory Saturday night, but if you’re busy (perhaps at How To Dress Well, Babe Rainbow and Rimar at Public Assembly?), you can check out the same lineup Monday night at Mercury Lounge. Kudos to Mercury Lounge for booking my two favorite shows of the week. Oh, and they also have another one worth checking out tomorrow night; Jangula, Otis Heat, Yellow Dogs and Phone Home.
One of my own personal favorite venues, Death By Audio, has an excellent lineup on Tuesday night, with Heliotropes, Tin Vulva, Shady Hawkins and a DJ set by NONE OTHER THAN AD-ROCK of the Beastie Boys. Ad-Rock? At Death By Audio? NO ONE should miss that, especially at the low, low price of $7. If you DO miss this one, I hope it’s because you have tickets for Bass Drum of Death, DZ Deathrays and Shark? at Glasslands, right around the corner. We won’t accept any other excuses.
And, to prove we’re topical over at My Social List… The NYC Zombie Prom is Saturday night at Irving Plaza, featuring a performance by GWAR. No bath salts, please.
