The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

This week is pretty refreshing.  It feels like the old days.  After taking a couple of months off of playing pretty much every day, at every venue known to man, DIIV are back, Pitchfork “Best New Music” sheen and all.

They’re part of our MOST BLOGGED ABOUT show this week, opening for buzz queen Bethany Cosentino’s Ali Koehler-less Best Coast (speaking of the old days) at Terminal 5, also with Those Darlins.  That one is next Tuesday, and there’s still tickets left for this all ages show at the cavernous waterfront midtown venue.  It seems that Best Coast’s buzz may have died a bit after The Only Place’s mixed reviews, but the Cosentino led act still manages to top our list, possibly in part to her recent spread with Wavves in SPIN (in which she looks absolutely amazing, by the way.)

Anyway, back to DIIV, who hold the rare distinction of being a part of both our MOST BLOGGED ABOUT show and my EDITOR’S PICK; as they’re the opener for the VERY recently announced Cloud Nothings show at 285 Kent tomorrow.  That’s two of my top ten albums for the year in one bill, at one of my favorite venues.  Tickets are going fast (if they’re still there when this is posted) so jump on this one.

HOWEVER, as awesome as that sounds, this week is a SPLIT EDITOR’S PICK, and one that presents a very interesting conundrum, because alllllllll the way across the East River and the isle of Manhattan, on the Hudson River at Pier 84, there’s my second EDITOR’S PICK, which is also tomorrow night, and that’s a FREE Dan Deacon and John Maus show; two guys who quite honestly are can’t miss live acts (Maus’ divisiveness and all.)  That one starts at 6, and 285’s doors are at 8.  Is it possible to see them all?  I’m not sure, but I’m going to give it a shot.

To further complicate matters, DIIV also plays a FREE show at The Hester’s opening party in Chelsea before their set at 285 Kent.  Doors for that one are at 7 PM, which may hold the key to my Thursday night plans… even if DIIV plays AT 7 PM, they gotta schlep across Manhattan to 285, unload and set up.  285’s sets usually start a little late anyway, so maybe we’ll all be all right?

Irving Plaza has been killing it with incredible hip hop shows lately, and Friday night is no different as they welcome El-P, Killer Mike and Mr. Muthafucking eXquire to their stage.  Closer to home, 285 Kent’s got another great show on Friday with Widowspeak, Total Slacker (who just added Night Manager’s David Tassy to the fold), Husky and Parquet Courts; and Shea Stadium’s hosting some of their favorites, So So Glos, Diarrhea Planet, Hard Nips, Grass Giraffes and Desert Sharks.

Saturday should draw you back to Manhattan, as the Village Voice’s free 4Knots Festival returns for a second go-around at South Street Seaport with an impressive lineup headlined by returning 90s indie rock legends, Archers of Loaf.  The undercard features a couple of bands seemingly influenced by the Archers; Crocodiles and Bleached, along with a couple of great pop acts; The Drums and Hospitality.  Afterwards, there’s a $15 afterparty at Beekman’s Beer Garden fronted by Black Lips, Kid Congo and Pink Monkey Birds. On the other side of Lower Manhattan, Oneohtrix Point Never is ALSO playing a free show at World Financial Center with David Lang and A Far Cry at 7 PM.   So you’re pretty much guaranteed an awesome FREE Saturday, weather permitting.
